Xabi Alonso was recently sacked from his position as Real Madrid head coach and is thought to be keen on the Liverpool role.
According to a report in Fichajes the appointment of the Spanish World Cup winner is “imminent” - and he has already identified which signing he would like to bring in.
Liverpool’s midfield is one area in need of rejuvenation. The midfield sector had its last refit in 2023 - and we could see a need for new players to be brought in.
For example Wataru Endo and Curtis Jones have both been linked with the exit - while there is contract uncertainty over Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai too.
Alonso therefore has pinpointed England midfielder Adam Wharton as his welcome gift at Anfield.
Wharton, 21, has been imperious for Crystal Palace since signing from Blackburn in February 2024. He went to the European Championship under Gareth Southgate and is widely expected to play a part for the Three Lions at the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
Wharton has been on the Liverpool radar for quite some time and he was also associated with a move to the Bernabeu when Alonso was in charge at Madrid.
Alonso believes the elegant left-footed midfielder is the ideal footballer to execute his ideas of the game. And it just so happens that Liverpool’s recruiters are very keen on the FA Cup winner too.
There is plenty of change afoot at Anfield - with the potential departure of Slot and arrival of Alonso in his place. It promises to kick off a new era on Merseyside - with Wharton becoming an integral part of a new-look Liverpool.
