England on the verge of World Cup history

England edged closer to unprecedented World Cup qualifying history after a composed 2-0 win over Serbia at Wembley extended their streak to seven consecutive clean sheets.

With Thomas Tuchel’s side still unbeaten defensively, shutting out Albania in their final match would make them the first European nation ever to complete an eight-game qualifying campaign without conceding.

Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze provided the goals, the Arsenal duo producing tidy finishes on either side of half-time to secure another routine victory for Tuchel’s team.

But the defensive milestone was the headline. England’s latest shutout pushed their run to seven qualifiers without a goal against, and while Tuesday’s trip to Tirana is technically a dead rubber with both sides locked into their positions, the opportunity to secure a historic record adds real edge to the occasion.

Keeping Albania out would see England surpass Bobby Robson’s 1990 squad, who completed a six-game campaign without conceding.

A final clean sheet would send England into the 2026 World Cup not just as record breakers, but as one of the tournament’s most organised and defensively formidable sides.
