Israel, who came into the decider as underdogs, started the brighter and threatened England on the break time and time again and, coming close to opening the score on the half-hour mark but for Alex Scott’s head to deny Tai Abed.

In the 40th minute, though, they would find their breakthrough. Another devastating counterattack was patiently constructed before Oscar Gloch received the ball at the top of the box.

The Israeli midfielder cut inside and out, sitting down a pair of England defenders before finishing well beyond the reach of Matthew Cox in the net.

England woke up in the second period as they began to dictate the tempo of the encounter and found their reward shortly after the restart. Jarell Quansah’s header back across goal was coolly poked home by Doyle to draw the sides level.

Both teams had chances with some last-ditch defending saving England and the post coming to Israel’s rescue as the game stretched into extra time.

In the end, it was a moment of quality from Harvey Vale whose in-swinging cross from the right was bundled over the line by Carney Chukwuemeka (who had been excellent all night).

Aaron Ramsey put the game to bed with four minutes to go, just after Doyle had had kept England ahead with a goal-line clearance.
