England produced a scintillating first-half display to secure a comfortable 3-0 friendly victory over a beleaguered Wales at Wembley.
Standout performances from Morgan Rogers and Bukayo Saka, among others, highlighted the team’s impressive attacking depth.
In fact, Thomas Tuchel’s side effectively ended the contest within the opening 20 minutes, scoring three unanswered goals that left the visitors stunned. First, the Aston Villa duo of Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins combined to give England a rapid two-goal advantage.
Shortly after, Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka added a spectacular third. Ultimately, the victory serves as a confident send-off before England travel to Riga for a World Cup qualifier against Latvia on Wednesday, 15th October.
Here is how the individual performances rated at Wembley:
Jordan Pickford (GK) – 7/10: After a quiet first half, he had a more engaged second period, making two sharp saves to deny Wales a consolation goal. He remained focused throughout and deservedly earned his clean sheet.
Ezri Konsa (RB) – 7/10: Filling in for the injured Reece James, the Aston Villa defender was a commanding presence at right-back. He dominated the flank with intelligent overlapping runs while also remaining defensively solid.
John Stones (CB) – 7/10: In his first international appearance in nearly a year, Stones was the picture of composure. He read the game effortlessly and handled the Welsh attack with ease. Furthermore, he survived a minor injury scare to complete a reassuring performance before his late substitution.
Marc Guéhi (CB) – 8/10: The Crystal Palace defender was sharp from the outset. In fact, his excellent anticipation allowed him to intercept a stray pass and provide the cross for Rogers’ opening goal. Overall, he was imperious at the back and instrumental in starting the rout.
Djed Spence (LB) – 7/10: Making his first start, the Tottenham Hotspur full-back provided energy and width down the left. He bombed forward with purpose while fulfilling his defensive duties effectively.
Elliot Anderson (CM) – 8/10: Despite an early misplaced pass, the Nottingham Forest midfielder settled to deliver another superb performance. He showed immense composure and discipline, effectively anchoring the midfield. As a result, his partner, Declan Rice, had the freedom to push forward.
Declan Rice (CM) – 8/10: Liberated by Anderson’s defensive assurance, Rice thrived in a more advanced role. His set-piece delivery was a constant threat, and he dictated the game’s tempo with authority before his second-half substitution.
Bukayo Saka (RW) – 8/10 (Man of the Match): Returning to the starting lineup, Saka played with a point to prove and was a constant menace. He then capped a brilliant display with a stunning, left-footed strike that curled into the top corner for England’s third. A Man of the Match performance and a sublime goal epitomised his confidence and quality. The goal made Saka Arsenal’s highest-scoring Englishman with 13 goals, surpassing Cliff Bastin’s tally of 12.
Morgan Rogers (AM) – 8/10: Justifying his selection, Rogers was the key architect of England’s victory. First, he showed a striker’s instinct to poke home the opener. He then pressed relentlessly and demonstrated superb vision to help create the second goal. Overall, it was an all-action performance from a player in scintillating form.
Anthony Gordon (LW) – 7/10: The Newcastle winger terrorised the Welsh defence in the first half with his direct running and trickery. His pace provided a different dimension to England’s attack and consistently forced defenders onto the back foot.
Ollie Watkins (CF) – 7/10: Given the chance to lead the line in Harry Kane’s absence, Watkins seized his opportunity by tapping in England’s second goal. Unfortunately, his night ended early after he picked up a knock, forcing his substitution at half-time.
