England, beaten 2-1 by Argentina on Wednesday night, will face France on Saturday at 23:00 in Miami in the third-place play-off. Argentina, the holders, meet Spain in Sunday’s final in New York.

According to RMC Sport, William Saliba played the tournament with a back fracture. He sustained the injury in a Premier League match for Arsenal before the World Cup.

Lionel Messi completed nine dribbles against England, the most in this competition. He is the first since 1966 to record nine dribbles and two assists in a World Cup match.

Messi is the leading assist provider in World Cup history with 12, and in the knockout stages with 10. He is also the tournament’s all-time top scorer with 21 goals.

The British government on Thursday called for a FIFA investigation after Argentina players displayed a banner asserting that the Falkland Islands are Argentine following their 2-1 semi-final win over England. The banner, referencing the territorial dispute that led to conflict in 1982, was carried by several players after full time.

After the final whistle, Argentina supporters celebrated in Paris. They gathered on Rue Dauphine before marching through the city.
