Thomas Tuchel takes charge of England for the first time as the Three Lions begin their World Cup qualification campaign.
After the disappointment of consecutive European Championship final defeats, Tuchel has been tasked with ending England’s wait for a major trophy. The former Chelsea manager has replaced Gareth Southgate, who stepped down following Euro 2024 after eight years in charge.
Albania arrive in London after disappointing campaigns at Euro 2024 and in the Nations League. Sylvinho’s side have lost all six previous meetings with England in all competitions.
Thomas Tuchel is expected to start with a back four for this evening’s contest, despite a preference for three central defenders during his previous stint in English football.
Arsenal teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly is likely to debut at left-back, while Newcastle centre-back Dan Burn is also hoping for a maiden appearance. The 32-year-old could become England’s oldest debutant since Bolton Wanderers forward Kevin Davies in 2010.
Tuchel has praised Jordan Henderson’s role despite criticism of the 34-year-old’s recall and the Ajax midfielder could partner Declan Rice in midfield. This week, the German hailed Henderson’s leadership and said he can have a big role in the new regime. Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White was a late inclusion to the squad after Cole Palmer’s withdrawal through injury.
England predicted XI: Pickford; James, Konsa, Guehi, Lewis-Skelly; Henderson, Rice; Foden, Bellingham, Gordon; Kane.
England host Albania in 2026 World Cup qualification on Friday 21st March 2025. Kick-off at Wembley is 19:45 GMT.
For viewers in the UK, the clash will be broadcast on ITV1 and ITVX.
