England and Ghana meet at Boston Stadium in Foxborough on Tuesday evening, with Group L topping firmly on the line.

Thomas Tuchel’s side were exhilarating in their opener, dismantling Croatia 4-2 in a display that announced England as genuine contenders. Ghana, meanwhile, claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time strike from Caleb Yirenkyi. Both sides arrive in Massachusetts with three points and the chance to seal knockout-stage qualification with a game to spare.

  • Kick-off: 21:00 BST
  • Venue: Gillette Stadium, Foxborough (Boston Stadium)
  • Referee: Said Martinez (Honduras)

England team news

Bukayo Saka returned to training on Sunday after his Achilles issue, and while he is available, Tuchel is not expected to take any risks with his fitness. Noni Madueke is set to retain his starting berth on the right flank.

Declan Rice and Marcus Rashford both trained on Monday and are anticipated to be available, with Rice set to continue his midfield partnership with Elliot Anderson.

In defence, Marc Guehi could come in to replace Ezri Konsa, who was culpable for one of Croatia’s goals on matchday one. Trevoh Chalobah has joined the squad as a replacement for Tino Livramento, who suffered a calf injury against Croatia and will miss the rest of the tournament.

Ghana team news

Lawrence Ati-Zigi, who suffered a groin injury and was withdrawn at half-time against Panama, has since returned to training and is in contention to face England. However, Benjamin Asare remains the expected starter between the sticks.

Thomas Partey is available for selection after missing the Panama match and is expected to come into the starting XI, likely replacing Elisha Owusu in midfield.

The influential midfielder’s presence will give Ghana considerably more control and experience in the engine room. Caleb Yirenkyi, the Panama match-winner, is expected to continue alongside him.

Form

England

England were dazzling against Croatia, registering 20 shots inside the penalty area — a new World Cup record — on the way to a commanding 4-2 victory.

Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford were all on the scoresheet, though Tuchel will demand greater defensive discipline after a shaky first half that allowed Croatia to score twice.

The attacking quality is beyond question; the defensive resilience under pressure is the area Ghana will look to expose.

Ghana

Ghana struggled for a cutting edge for 94 minutes against Panama before Yirenkyi’s late winner spared their blushes.

Queiroz will ask for a similar defensive structure tonight, while hoping his attackers can pose a greater threat on the counter against an England side that showed defensive vulnerabilities against Croatia.

Partey’s return gives them a genuinely dangerous midfield option, and Queiroz will look to build a platform from which Antoine Semenyo and Jordan Ayew can threaten on the counter.

Predicted lineups

England possible starting XI: Pickford; R. James, Stones, Guehi, O’Reilly; Anderson, Rice; Madueke, Bellingham, Gordon; Kane

Ghana possible starting XI: B. Asare; Senaya, Adjetey, Opoku, Mensah; Yirenkyi, Partey; Fatawu, Sulemana, Semenyo; J. Ayew
