England Women’s U-23s drew 0-0 with their Spanish counterparts at St. George’s Park, while the U-19s lost 2-1 to Germany.

Neither U-23 side could create a clear-cut chance in the first half, leading to several changes from Spain at the break and early in the second half.

The visitors produced the better openings in the second period but England goalkeeper Lucy Thomas made important saves to keep it goalless, before – as is common practice in age-group matches – the fixture concluded with a penalty shoot-out.

Next up for England WU23s is a game against Belgium at Tranmere Rovers’ Prenton Park on Monday 20 February (kick-off 7pm).

England Women’s Under-19s were unfortunate to end on the losing side against Germany in their opening game of La Nucia International Tournament in Spain.

Emma Coates and her side are in Alicante for the tournament this week and kicked-off against the Germans on Thursday evening.

And after falling behind to their opponents just after the quarter-hour mark, Freya Godfrey equalised within five minutes with a smart finish when one-on-one with the ‘keeper.

It was all square at the break and there were chances at both ends in the second half for either team to snatch the win.

But it was Germany who made the breakthrough, scoring in the 81st minute to make a winning start to the tournament.

The Young Lionesses will be back in action on Tuesday 21 February, when they take on Switzerland at La Nucia Stadium.
