England face Panama at the New York/New Jersey Stadium on Saturday evening with their place in the World Cup round of 32 already confirmed, targeting a win to secure top spot in Group L.
Uruguay’s defeat by Spain earlier on Saturday confirmed England’s progression before their group finale had even begun. Thomas Tuchel’s side are now free to focus entirely on winning, with first place the prize and two key players already ruled out or severely doubted.
Tuchel confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Reece James will not play. The Chelsea right back suffered a hamstring injury during the goalless draw with Ghana on Tuesday and has not trained since.
Djed Spence steps in at right back. Declan Rice is a significant doubt after missing Thursday’s training session entirely, having left the Ghana game with strapping on his left calf.
Rice is also one yellow card away from a round of 32 suspension, giving Tuchel every reason to keep him on the bench. Kobbie Mainoo is expected to start alongside Elliot Anderson in central midfield.
Bukayo Saka is set for his first start of the tournament. The Arsenal winger has been managing an Achilles problem and came off the bench in both previous matches, but has been passed fit enough to begin here. Noni Madueke, ineffective against Ghana, makes way.
Marcus Rashford starts on the left flank, with Jude Bellingham in his customary role behind Harry Kane. The Konsa-Guehi centre-back partnership continues, with John Stones remaining on the bench. Nico O’Reilly returns at left back. Jordan Pickford continues in goal.
England possible starting XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Spence, Konsa, Guehi, O’Reilly; Anderson, Mainoo; Saka, Bellingham, Rashford; Kane
The match will be broadcast live on ITV1 and ITVX in the UK.
