England went into the game knowing that they would most likely need to better The Netherlands’ score against Belgium by three goals. The Lionesses gave it their all, scoring six goals without reply but it wasn’t enough with the Dutch winning 4-0 in Tilburg.
Sarina Wiegman’s side went at it from the off and they established the lead early in the game through an Alex Greenwood header from a corner.
Scotland then thought that they should have had a penalty when Lisa Evans was barged over by Lucy Bronze in the box before Lauren Hemp hit the post at the other end.
England netted a second goal just after the half-hour mark courtesy of Lauren James’ heavily deflected strike before the same player almost immediately made it 3-0 as she impressively found the top corner of the Scotland net.
The Lionesses went into the break four goals to the good. James found Beth Mead with a cross to the back post and she fired her effort beyond home keeper Lee Gibson and into the net.
England added a fifth goal to their tally early in the second half when Fran Kirby was able to run into the six-yard box and tap the ball home.
From that point, you’d have expected the Lionesses to kick on further but Scotland finally edged into the game and both Martha Thomas and Kirsty Hanson spurned good chances to score before Abi Harrison went close with a flick.
In second half injury time, Thomas saw her header kept out by a combination of Mary Earps, Bronze and the post. England then went up the other end and scored a sixth goal through a Bronze header.
Elsewhere, The Netherlands netted two goals in second half injury time as they defeated Belgium 4-0 and claimed top spot in the group on goal difference. The Dutch will now go into the UEFA Women’s Nations League semi-final draw while England end the competition as group runners-up.
