England’s footballers are making their presence felt across Europe this season, with English players scoring more goals in the Champions League than those of any other nation.
So far, 20 different English players have found the net, putting England ahead of Brazil on 17, while France and Portugal sit level on 15 and Spain just behind on 14.
Obviously, the new competition format helps these numbers to grow. Last season produced a record 21 English scorers in the Champions League, but with six Premier League clubs still harbouring hopes of reaching the next round, that figure looks increasingly likely to be surpassed well before the campaign concludes.
The latest additions to the list arrived last night. Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly marked the occasion with his first Champions League goal, and there was no better stage for it than the Bernabéu. His strike helped City to a 2-1 win over Real Madrid, a memorable moment for the youngster on one of world football’s most iconic pitches.
In the second half, Lewis Miley joined the list. Introduced from the bench during Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Bayer Leverkusen, the teenager met Anthony Gordon’s lofted cross with a well-placed header to score his maiden Champions League goal. In doing so, he became Newcastle’s youngest-ever goalscorer in the competition.
