Enrique Riquelme’s potential entry into the Real Madrid presidential race could complicate José Mourinho’s prospects and Benfica’s planning in the coming days.
Record writes that the 37-year-old renewable energy executive intends to stand, but must submit his list by the end of today, Saturday, 23 May, to join the contest.
If his candidacy is validated, elections would be scheduled for seven June. During the campaign, Madrid can proceed with buys and sales, but head coach decisions would be placed on hold, which could slow any move for Mourinho, who is favoured by Florentino Pérez.
If Riquelme makes the ballot and later wins, Mourinho would not be in his plans. Riquelme has repeatedly indicated that his preferred choice is Jürgen Klopp.
The timetable also affects Mourinho’s exit terms. Until 26 May, Madrid would need to pay Benfica seven million euros to hire him. If that window closes, and if Pérez prevails, he would have to negotiate with Rui Costa, with Mourinho under contract until summer 2027.
