Enzo Barrenechea returned to José Mourinho’s starting XI against AFS and scored Benfica’s second in the win, but his celebration drew the most attention.

Record reports that the Argentine had planned the routine and framed it as a statement of intent. Images on social media showed him covering his ears, gesturing to mimic chatter, then pretending to fire shots.

The performance came after a difficult spell caused by a shoulder injury, and represented a significant step towards full sharpness.

Richard Ríos also started, and the original midfield pairing dealt with João Henriques’ side. Benfica now turn their attention to Real Madrid.

This season Barrenechea, valued at €15 million, has played 35 times for Benfica, with 19 in Liga Portugal Betclic, 12 in the Champions League, two in the Taça de Portugal, one in the Supertaça and one in the Taça da Liga. Across 2,630 minutes he has two goals and one assist.
