Chelsea star became sixth player to be sent off in a World Cup final

Enzo Fernandez has released a statement in the wake of Argentina’s defeat in the World Cup final.

Ferran Torres struck the winner in extra time after Chelsea midfielder Fernandez saw red in second-half stoppage time after picking up a second yellow card.

The Argentine had been initially booked by Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic for dissent, and he was given his marching orders after a late lunge on Pau Cubarsi.

He apologised to the Argentina fans as he trudged off, but let his frustrations out as he kicked a pitchside microphone as he headed for the dressing rooms.

Fernandez took to Instagram on Monday to pen a message to the Argentinian supporters that had backed Lionel Scaloni’s men in North America.

"For years, this group has represented our country in the best possible way.

"It teaches that competing isn’t just about winning, but about giving everything for the shirt and never giving up. Being part of this group, which has always stood up, competed to the very end, and defended these colors with pride, humility, and commitment, is something I’ll always cherish.

"I want to thank all the Argentine fans. Thank you for always being there, for supporting us in every match, for your affection, for your unconditional support, and for making us feel at home no matter where we are in the world.

"Wearing my country’s shirt is the greatest honor of my career, and I will continue to give everything I have every time I’m called upon to defend it."

An investigation was launched by FIFA into Argentina’s conduct following the full-time whistle at the MetLife Stadium.

A brawl broke out between players as the Spaniards celebrated and the Argentinians let their frustrations get the better of them, as Nahuel Molina squared up to Rodri and Leandro Paredes threw punches at both Eric Garcia and Gavi, the who latter of whom he wrestled to the ground.
