Standard Sport understands a breakthrough in negotiations has led to a deal being struck that will match Alexander Isak’s £125m move from Newcastle to Liverpool a year ago to the day.

The Argentine’s move from Chelsea to City is expected to be the headline move on Transfer Deadline Day.

City were always expected to take their interest in Fernandez right down to the final days of the window and look to complete a deal then.

Chelsea had set an arbitrary deadline for offers of 5pm BST on Friday August 14, 2026 for bids for Fernandez to be made. At that point, they had informed potential buyers of the payment terms they would accept, and had said they would be willing to accept £120m for a move.

After the deadline, Chelsea wanted more than £120m for the 2022 World Cup winner and new terms would have to be agreed for the player.

City worked with Fernandez’s agent Javier Pastore and Chelsea themselves to agree a deal for the 25-year-old, who was uninvolved in Chelsea’s last two matches, against Luton Town and Brighton, and had made it clear his preference was to leave Chelsea.

When he joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023, the deal was worth £106.8m.
