Enzo Maresca has said Marc Guiu is working his way into contention for minutes, with Chelsea struggling for options up front.

Guiu was recalled early from his loan spell at Sunderland after Liam Delap suffered a hamstring injury before the international break.

However, the 19-year-old has yet to play a single minute since his return to Chelsea, with winger Tyrique George preferred up front during the Blues’ 1-0 win over Benfica on Tuesday.

It has been a frustrating period for Guiu, who would have expected to play more minutes, with Chelsea short of options up top, but Maresca says he is not worried that the decision to bring him back to Stamford Bridge could stunt his development.

“I do not think so. Personally, I do not think so because he is back with a big club like Chelsea. Again, he is going to get minutes with us, no doubt,” Maresca said in his pre-match press conference on Friday morning.

“Also, for me, the development of a young player is not just about the game when you are so young. It is also about the training session and the day-by-day. And I think it is important that he is with us and he is working with us.”

Guiu enjoyed a productive debut season at Chelsea following his £5million move from Barcelona, netting six goals in seven games as the Blues lifted the Conference League.

His season, however, was cut short after suffering a hamstring injury in February.

The arrivals of Delap and Joao Pedro over the summer then saw Guiu fall down the pecking order.

Guiu was sent on loan to Sunderland, but following Delap’s injury, Chelsea felt it best to recall the striker to ease the pressure on Pedro.

Maresca has yet to use Guiu since his return to the club, but admitted his application in training had improved immeasurably, and was categorical that the Spaniard would play for Chelsea this season.

“Marc is working well this week. He has worked very, very good. Much better compared to the first weeks when he came back. But for sure he is going to get minutes with us and he's going to play games.”
