VAR ‘error of judgement’ allowed Erling Haaland’s second-half winner to stand at Old Trafford

City claimed a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford after Erling Haaland’s second-half strike was allowed to stand following a VAR review – a decision which officiating body Pro Ref later admitted was wrong.

Enzo Fernandez, who was in an offside position, should have been deemed to be affecting play – but the incident brought up memories of something similar in a 2023 derby for Maresca.

He recalled: "Three years ago when I was here (as assistant manager to Pep Guardiola), it happened the exact same against United.

“The goal was not a regular goal, if you remember. And to be honest, no one apologised. We are still waiting for the apology for that goal.

On that occasion, Marcus Rashford was deemed not to be interfering with play as he left the ball and allowed Bruno Fernandes to net an equaliser. A few minutes later, Rashford bagged the winner.

Speaking ahead of City’s Carabao Cup third-round tie against Norwich, which takes place at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday night, Maresca added that he was disappointed his side’s “unbelievable” performance has been lost amid the controversy.

They claimed three points despite Phil Foden’s first-half red card for lashing out at Fernandes.

"Talking about one episode or one moment after that game when we played for 70-75 minutes with 10 players, I think it's quite poor," the Italian said.

"I think the performance was unbelievable, and I'm pleased with the performance."

Excluding the Community Shield, City have won every game so far this season and will be hot favourites to see off Championship side Norwich when they begin the defence of their Carabao Cup crown.

Maresca says he will give some of his fringe players a run-out against the Canaries with Sunday’s Premier League home game with Sunderland looming.
