Manchester City said in a statement on Monday that the 46-year-old Italian has signed a three-year contract through 2029 to succeed Pep Guardiola, who departed at the end of the season after a decade of trophies.

Maresca previously coached City’s under-23s in 2020-21 and returned to Guardiola’s staff in 2022-23. He left with medals from the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League before taking charge of Leicester in the second tier.

After one season and promotion, he moved to Chelsea. Working with a very young squad, the Blues won the Europa Conference League then the Club World Cup in summer 2025, beating Paris SG 3-0, and finished fourth to return to the Champions League.

He was dismissed on 1 January amid a dip in results, leaving him free to return to Manchester once Guardiola’s exit was confirmed. He knows the club and its workings, sees the job as a magnificent opportunity and wants City to win, play good football and embrace the pressure of representing the club.

Maresca inherits a formidable group featuring Rodri, Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland, though long-serving John Stones and Bernardo Silva have departed this summer. His immediate task is to reclaim the Premier League title for the first time since 2024, with the Champions League also a priority after recent exits in the quarter-finals, play-offs and last 16.
