Enzo Maresca has provided an update on Romeo Lavia ahead of Chelsea’s game against Bournemouth on Saturday.

It had initially been reported Lavia would be out for at least a month, but it appears unclear when he will return to action.

Lavia has been plagued by injury issues since arriving at Chelsea from Southhampton in 2023, and has made just 30 appearances for the Blues.

The 21-year-old is now in his third season at Stamford Bridge, but has struggled to be available for a sustained period of time.

Lavia picked up his latest injury against Qarabag last month.

The frustrating thing is Lavia has so much quality, and when he does play he makes a huge difference to the team, and gives Chelsea a brilliant option in midfield.

Maresca was asked ahead of Saturday’s game with Bournemouth for an update on Lavia, and his answer wasn’t promising.

“It’s a muscular problem, and we don’t know yet when he can be back,” he told his pre-match press-conference.

Asked whether it was short or long term Maresca simply stated:

“We don’t know.”

Chelsea have been light in midfield with Lavia’s absence, and with Caicedo suspended and Dario Essugo still not available, the Blues have used Reece James and Malo Gusto in midfield.

Having lost against Leeds on Wednesday, Chelsea need to respond with a win against the Cherries, which is easier said than done.

Bournemouth are on a five match winless streak, but are a tough side to beat at home, although Chelsea have a good recent record on the south coast.

The table is really tight and just three points cover Chelsea in fourth and Everton in tenth, and the Blues really need to ensure they don’t start falling down the table and get sucked into a top four race.
