Chelsea beat Lincoln City 2-1 last night in the League Cup, but Enzo Maresca is admitting the need for improvement.
And he’s bang on. Despite the win, Chelsea were terrible, there are no two ways about it in my opinion. They won the game through two quick goals in the space of about five minutes, one of them being a wonder goal and the other should have been defended much better.
It took Maresca having to get very angry at half time when Chelsea were 1-0 down against League One opposition to turn it around and see them through to the next round by the skin of their teeth. They would have been hugely relieved to have heard the final whistle come the end because Lincoln were still going for it and threatening the Chelsea goal with intent.
They were superb, Chelsea were terrible.
Maresca knows deep down how bad his team was, and he is out there now admitting that they need to improve ahead of their next match against Brighton this Saturday. That will be a whole different ball game.
As you can see above, Maresca has posted on Instagram this afternoon.
He says:
“Our journey continues and we don’t stop looking for how we can improve and grow. A huge thank you to our fans and to the players.
“See you on Saturday.”
If Chelsea struggled against Lincoln this week, they are going to find a much tougher team to face in Brighton this Saturday.
Lincoln were actually the better side against Chelsea and did not deserve to lose. Brighton are going to be smelling blood right now after that dire Chelsea performance followed two defeats in a row.
