Speaking at his press conference ahead of VfB Stuttgart’s Bundesliga opener against SC Freiburg, head coach Sebastian Hoeneß confirmed that Enzo Millot and Maximilian Mittelstädt are doubts for the first game.
When giving an update on the fitness of his squad, Hoeneß said:
“It’s known about Niko Nartey, Dan-Axel Zagadou , Josha Vagnoman and Luca Raimund are also not an issue for Saturday, Leonidas Stergiou and Anthony Rouault are also not an issue.”
Before adding:
“Enzo Millot and Maxi Mittelstädt had to take it easy in training during the week, so we’ll have to wait and see. A possible absence of Yannik Keitel was added yesterday, and that will be examined today. It’s the challenge we have now, but we have options.“
Millot and Mittelstädt were some of Stuttgart’s protagonists during their DFL Super Cup loss to Bayer Leverkusen last Saturday. The duo combined for Stuttgart’s opening goal when Mittelstädt played a cutback cross into Millot, whose low-driven shot beat Lukas Hradecky.
The potential absence of the pair opens the door for some of the new signings to stake their claim in the starting 11. To replace Mittelstädt, Stuttgart loaned in Frans Krätzig from Bayern Munich, and away from his missed penalty, he supplied the cross which Deniz Undav converted to give Stuttgart the lead.
While Millot, who only recently returned from the Olympics with France, could be replaced by either Fabian Rieder or Nick Woltemade who did not feature in the BayArena last Saturday.
