Eray Cömert has suffered an abdominal muscle injury, leaving Valencia short at centre-back. The club said in a statement that the injury was sustained during Saturday’s match against Elche CF. No timeframe has been set, and the defender will receive medical, physiotherapy and reconditioning treatment at the Ciudad Deportiva.

The Swiss was hurt in the 70th minute at the Martínez Valero after colliding with Affengruber and Petrot while attacking a corner. Elche scored in the 72nd minute with Cömert still on the turf, and he was replaced by Pepelu in the 74th minute.

Post-match, Carlos Corberán criticised how the situation was handled, noting his side had the chance to put the ball out or commit a foul, and that Elche advanced against 10 to create the opening.

His absence is a significant setback for Corberán, who had come to rely on the Swiss as his dependable centre-back.

The injury adds to the problem affecting Unai Núñez and leaves César Tárrega as the only fit first-team centre-back. In principle, Núñez could return next Tuesday for the trip to Mallorca, although that will depend on how his injury progresses.
