Eight games down in the Eredivisie as we enter another international break. There were plenty of goals this week as a number of Eredivisie clubs looked to put some poor performances in Europe behind them.
Friday night’s action: FC Groningen get back on track
After a defeat to Feyenoord last time out, FC Groningen got their so far successful season back on track with an away win over NAC Breda. A first half goal from Tika de Jonge and one just after half-time from Thmo van Bergen was enough for all three points. NAC did grab a late consolation goal through Mohamed Nassoh, but his 94th minute strike was not enough to get a second draw of the season.
Saturday’s action: Goal fest in Rotterdam and a comeback for Heerenveen
Sparta Rotterdam and Ajax kicked things off on Saturday with a six goal thriller. Wout Weghorts and Tobian Lauritesen scored just before the break to make it 1-1, before a quickfire double for Sparta from Mitchell van Bergen and Joshua Kitolano had the hosts 3-1 up after 55 minutes. Ajax dominated possession and finally responded in the 73rd minute through Weghorst again. Deep into added time Oscar Gloukh came up with a dramatic equaliser to earn the Amsterdam side a point.
Not so many goals in the second Eredivisie game on Saturday. Fortuna Sittard welcomed FC Volendam and took the lead early on through Justin Lonwijk. that proved to be the only goal of the game as Fortuna Sittard grabbed their fourth Eredivisie win of the season. Volendam were unable to add to their first win of the campaign last time out.
PSV, fresh off a draw with Bayer Leverkusen, crushed PEC Zwolle away from home. First half goals from Ismael Saibari and Dennis Man had them in control, and after Tristan Gooijer was sent off for the hosts any slim chance of a PEC Zwolle come back was over. Joey Veerman and Ryan Flamingo added another two for a comfortable PSV victory.
Heerenveen left it late to overcome Excelsior at home on Saturday evening. The Rotterdam side took the lead through Irakli Yegoian in the 11th minute and held that advantage until the 89th. Adam Carlen gave away a penalty which was converted by Dylan Vente. Luuk Brouwers then set up Sam Kersten in the 94th minute to win it for the hosts.
Sunday’s action: Feyenoord win thriller with Utrecht
FC Twente avoided being the second side to lose to Heracles this season. The hosts were behind just beofre half time as Ivan Mesik gave the Eredivisie’s bottom side the lead. However, just minutes into the second-half and Twente struck back through Max Bruns. Late on, Thomas van den Belt made it 2-1 to the hosts and despite a late red card for Bart van Rooij they held on for all three points.
Feyenoord and Utrecht shared five goals as the league leaders continued their good start to the season. Ayase Ueda’s first half strike was cancelled out in the second half by Utrecht’s Gjivai Zechiel. Just three minutes later and Feyenoord were back in front through Sem Steijn, a lead they would hold on to until seven minutes remaining. Derry Murkin then looked to have stolen a point for Utrecht, only for the hosts to grab a late winner through that man Ueda again. The former Cercle Brugge striker now has eight goals in eight Eredivisie games.
Telstar made AZ Alkmaar sweat on Sunday afternoon. The hosts had taken a 2-0 lead through the in form Mexx Meerdink and Matej Sin. However, Telstar fought back after half-time through Tyrese Noslin. Sadly for the newly promoted side, they were unable to convert any of their other 14 shots on goal and ended up losing 2-1. For AZ, they were able to just about put an embarrassing midweek defeat in Europe behind them.
The final match of the game week in the Eredivisie saw Go Ahead Eagles, one of the only sides to win in Europe, face NEC Nijmegen. An own goal from the Eagles Jari De Busser gave NEC the lead, but the away side were then down to 10 men when Philippe Sandler earned a quick second yellow card in the 85th minute. Just under 10 minutes later and the experienced Gerrit Nauber earned Go Ahead Eagles a home point.
