Nigerian national team head coach Eric Chelle has addressed the altercation he had with a member of the Democratic Republic of Congo technical team during the African playoffs final on Sunday.
The Leopards beat the Super Eagles on penalties to advance to the inter-confederation 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs following a one-all draw after extra time.
During the nerve-wrecking shootout, the French-Malian tactician was caught on camera involved in a tussle with the Congolese bench and accused their counterparts of using voodoo after the defeat.
Chelle has since taken to his Instagram account to explain the reason behind his unprofessional behavior and expressed pride with how his charges applied themselves against DR Congo.
“Football is all about emotions. After the match, I reacted impulsively because of an altercation with a member of the DRC staff who tried to enter my technical area,” wrote the Nigeria boss.
"I never intended to target the Congolese people or their staff, whom I respect.
"Disappointed by our elimination, but proud of my players. Congratulations to Congo, who were the better team. Their fans showed great passion, just like ours. We'll move forward together.
"I also want to clarify that any Twitter account in my name is fake.
Having missed out on back-to-back World Cups, Nigeria will now switch their focus to the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco next month.
