Erik ten Hag has said Manchester United winger Antony is ‘like a son’ but has cast doubt on re-signing the player for a third time.
Ten Hag has taken over at Bayer Leverkusen ahead of the new season, replacing Xabi Alonso following the latter’s move to Real Madrid.
The Dutchman has been linked with a raid on his former club to sign Antony, who is free to leave Manchester United after a disappointing spell in the Premier League.
Antony restored his reputation during an impressive loan spell at Real Betis last season, who are keen to sign the Brazilian on a permanent basis.
Leverkusen have been named as potential rivals in the race to sign the 25-year-old and Ten Hag admits Antony is a player he hugely admires.
Having twice previously signed the winger, including for his £82m move to Manchester United from Ajax, Ten Hag said Antony is ‘like a son’ but insisted that Leverkusen are not currently pursuing a deal.
However, he refused to rule out a future move. Manchester United are understood to have set an asking price in the region of £30m.
“He has great quality. I signed him twice. He was like a son to me, he still is a son to me,” Ten Hah told German outlet BILD.
“We’re not interested in him at the moment, but we’ll see what happens in the future.”
