Erik ten Hag has been relieved of his position as Manchester United manager after a 2-1 defeat against West Ham proved all too much for the highly scrutinised Dutch manager. After more than two years as the Red Devils’ boss, the English powerhouse announced on Monday that the former Twente and Ajax man is no longer in charge at Old Trafford. Ruud van Nistelrooy, who joined the technical staff as an assistant last summer, has been announced as the interim manager.

United have suffered poor form in the opening stages of the Premier League, having already lost to Brighton & Hove Albion, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, while at the start of the season they lost to Manchester City in the battle for the Community Shield. On Sunday, things went wrong against West Ham, keeping the 20-time Premier League winners in the bottom half of the table in 14th.

In the Europa League, United started with three draws, against FC Twente, FC Porto and Fenerbahçe. In the League Cup, the crowd was entertained with a 7-0 win over Barnsley, yet it was one of few bright sparks this term.

Ten Hag’s sacking marks the end of a difficult run at Old Trafford. The Dutch manager won two trophies with United: the League Cup and last season’s FA Cup, yet battled constant scrutiny in the face of adversity.
