Erling Haaland became the Premier League era’s leading Manchester derby goalscorer as his strike at Old Trafford sealed a gritty win for Enzo Maresca’s Manchester City.
In the 199th meeting between the rivals, the 26-year-old settled it in the 60th minute for City’s 10 men. The goal took him to nine in eight league derbies, overtaking the eight of Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero. According to Goal.com, he had the milestone in mind and set out to break it.
"I knew about this record before, I read about it, so it had ended up in my head," Haaland said. "I’m super proud of that. This is something that makes me really, really happy because we all know how special this game is."
After sustained pressure, he found space in the box and finished instinctively, then a three-minute VAR check confirmed the goal to silence the home crowd. He has since explained that his finishing is driven by feel rather than overthinking in the moment.
Haaland also spoke about the bond he has built with City’s fans, embracing the rivalry since his first derby at the Etihad. On his personal targets, he said: "Of course, I have them but for me it’s about developing still. It’s a long season, just try to enjoy it."
