Erling Haaland returns to the Santiago Bernabeu tonight with Manchester City, stepping once again into the stadium that long hoped to welcome him in white rather than as an opponent.

The superstar striker has been one of the defining forces of European football since joining City, and ahead of the massive Champions League clash, he offered a candid look into his journey and the decisions that shaped his career.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, as relayed by AS, Haaland opened up about the intense interest he received from across Europe during the months leading up to his move.

Why City and not Real Madrid

Real Madrid were among the clubs keeping a close eye on him, but Haaland revealed that Pep Guardiola’s personal involvement proved decisive. Describing how the move came together, he said,

“Guardiola called me. It was a pleasant conversation. He told me I could score a lot of goals with him. In Norway, we watch the Premier League.

“When Guardiola called me, I didn’t hesitate, and in the end, I think it’s working out well. And I think timing is very important.

“When I arrived at City, they needed a striker. I was also motivated to show that Pep’s team can be direct, not just passing the ball around.”

Despite the past, Real Madrid’s admiration for Haaland has not faded. Reports in Spain continue to suggest that the club have not removed his name from their long-term plans, especially as they consider future options in attack.

His age, goalscoring record and physical profile make him exactly the type of player Los Blancos typically target for generational signings.

However, Haaland struck a composed tone when discussing his future. The striker made it clear that he is in no rush to leave Manchester, stating,

“I’m calm, focused, and very happy here.

“So it is a really good place to develop, and ultimately, England is a football-mad country, and I think it’s the best place to play football. I want to be a part of it.”

His return to the Bernabeu tonight may reopen old debates, but Haaland’s message is simple that he is happy at Manchester City, fully committed, and determined to keep growing in what he considers the ideal environment.
