Erling Haaland used Instagram to reveal his post-Christmas weight, a playful response to Pep Guardiola’s plan to check players after the festivities.

The 25-year-old posted a photo of himself on the scales showing 94.4 kg, adding that everything was fine. Gianluigi Donnarumma reacted in the comments with crying-laughing emojis.

Before the break, Guardiola had cautioned that any player above their usual weight would miss Saturday’s trip to Nottingham Forest at 13:30. He set out that every player has a target figure and that he would assess them on their return that day.

He said players could enjoy themselves, but anyone coming back about three kilos heavier would stay in Manchester and not travel. The stance echoed his past criticism of Kalvin Phillips after the 2022 World Cup for returning above his target.

Even so, Guardiola underlined the need to give rest in a packed schedule, noting that whenever possible he offers a day off so players can decompress and arrive with fresh legs for the match.
