Ernesto Valverde will not continue as Athletic Club head coach next season, the coach said in a video released by the club.

His contract expires in June and he said the decision had been considered for some time and discussed with the hierarchy.

President Jon Uriarte’s attempts to renew his deal have failed. It is an election year at Ibaigane, and an opposition ticket could yet emerge. The board must now find a reliable successor, with Sarabia, Iraola, Iñigo Pérez and Bielsa mentioned in recent months, though no official talks have taken place.

Valverde will stay in charge until the season ends. Athletic are out of all cups and, with safety almost assured, will push for Europe over the final 10 league games, starting on Sunday against Betis. They are also watching whether extra continental places become available.

Early optimism has faded into a disappointing campaign, and the season will finish with a minimum aim of Europa League or Conference League qualification.

Valverde has drawn heavy criticism, notably after a limp Supercopa showing and an early Champions League exit, and some team selections suggested the Champions League was not the priority. Frequent injuries have hindered the squad, with Laporte, Oihan Sancet and Nico Williams missing significant stretches of the season.
