Espirito Santo says West Ham must ‘finish with dignity’ as relegation fears grow

Nuno Espirito Santo says his West Ham squad “owe it to the club” to fight until the very end after their hopes of staying in the Premier League suffered a huge blow with defeat at Newcastle.

West Ham sit 18th with only one game left to play, with 17th placed Spurs two points ahead of them. Tottenham’s vastly superior goal difference means they will only need a point in either of their last two games to stay up and send West Ham down, however.

“We started poorly in the game, we were soft the way we conceded the first goal, the second goal, then everything is much harder,” the West Ham boss reflected after his side’s 3-1 defeat to Newcastle at St James’ Park.

“But let’s try to finish the season with dignity, with respect to the club. It’s going to be a hard week in front of us but we owe it to the club to try until the end.”

“Let’s wait until Tuesday (Chelsea v Tottenham) but we have been in these situations in recent weeks where you have chances to go and don’t take it, then we expect what is happening in other games. It is possible but it is difficult.”
