According to Coluna Do Fla, Estudiantes (ARG) have asked Conmebol’s disciplinary unit to suspend Memphis Depay of Corinthians ahead of the Libertadores quarter-final second leg. The São Paulo club are already preparing the player’s defence.
The flashpoint came after Corinthians’ equaliser, when the forward raised his middle finger at the Estudiantes supporters. The Argentine club argue this breaches the body’s disciplinary code, citing unsporting conduct and provocation.
In a comparable case in 2025, Flamengo’s Bruno Henrique was reported for unsporting conduct after a quarter-final against Estudiantes. He received only a warning and a 25,000 dollar fine, R$ 136,000 at the time. Corinthians are taking that case as a reference in the defence they will file to Conmebol on Thursday 17.
Depay remains eligible to play the return on Wednesday 16 at Neo Química Arena, kick-off 21:30 Brasília time, against Estudiantes. The Argentine complaint is proceeding in parallel and does not prevent his involvement.
The first leg finished 1-1 in La Plata, so the winners will reach the semi-finals. If it is level again, the tie will be settled on penalties. Corinthians face added pressure to win at home.
Elsewhere, Flamengo beat Independiente del Valle (EQU) 2-0 in Quito at altitude. The return takes place on Thursday 17 at the Maracanã, 21:30 Brasília time.
Before turning fully to the Libertadores, Flamengo continue their Brasileirão campaign. On Sunday 13, Leonardo Jardim’s side host Corinthians at the Maracanã at 17:30 Brasília time.
