After a period of sustained Mainz pressure in the mid-to-late stages of the first half, Union struck against the run of play in the 38th minute. Ilić got there ahead of the stranded Zentner and headed the ball into an empty net to give Union the lead with a well-worked goal. Ilić laid the ball off for Burke, who received it with his back to goal, turned sharply and fired the ball under the crossbar to make it 2-1.
