Ethan Ampadu has outlined the half-time message that reset Leeds United at Manchester City in November, a pivotal moment in their campaign. “That half time, it felt like we all had to remind ourselves what it takes to play in a Leeds United shirt, and what you’ve got to give and the basics of running around, working hard and fighting. Having that belief in ourselves,” he told the official Leeds United podcast.
Leeds were second best before the break, two down and with Daniel Farke under growing scrutiny. A switch to a back three after Daniel James’s injury sparked a response.
By 68 minutes it was 2-2, with substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulling one back four minutes after the restart. He then won the penalty that saw Lukas Nmecha turn in the rebound from Gianluigi Donnarumma’s save.
It finished 3-2 after Phil Foden’s 91st-minute strike. The following week brought a 3-1 win over Chelsea and a 3-3 draw with Liverpool. “In a game any manager, and our manager, can tweak stuff all the time. But when you have that belief… and then you have a positive performance, I think that helps create belief and momentum.”
“We’ve been riding and pushing that. I think that’s what’s been the change more than anything else.”
Since that defeat, Leeds have lost only twice. Manchester City visit Elland Road on Saturday. United are six points above the drop and have lost only one home game, to Arsenal, since the Etihad trip.
