Austria sealed a straightforward 2-0 win over Northern Ireland in Southampton, which left Kenny Shiels’ side with almost no chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.
Scorers: Schiechtl 19′, Naschenweng 88′
Austria were dominant from start to finish in this Group A encounter, as they earned their first victory of the tournament so far.
Northern Ireland’s four changes from the side that lost 4-1 to Norway made little difference as Austria established themselves early on, enjoying the majority of the ball and the chances, too.
The opener came from a set-piece, delivered into the box by Sarah Puntigam and poked home through a static Northern Ireland defence by Katharina Schiechtl.
Northern Ireland weren’t deterred by the scoreline in the second half, as they worked hard to keep their shape and had some attacks of their own.
Yet Austria finished the job with a second goal late on, a low shot into the corner from Katharina Naschenweng making it almost impossible for Northern Ireland to qualify with one group stage fixture still to play.
