Germany and Austria went head-to-head at the Brentford Community Stadium with the winner securing a spot in the Womenâs Euro 2022 semi-final.
Hereâs how it went.
Scorers: Magull 25â˛, Popp 89â˛
The second quarter-final at the 2022 Womenâs Euro started in blistering fashion as, to the surprise of some, Austria came closest first. Marina Georgieva rose highest from a corner but the 25-year-old could only direct her header onto the post.
It was Germany, however, who struck first. Manuela Zinsberger in the Austria goal was put under consistent pressure all evening with the Germans determined to stop them from playing out of the back.
The Arsenal keeperâs clearance was headed straight back down the wing where Klara Buhl bullied her way behind the Austrain defence before cutting the ball back to Alexandra Popp.
The experienced German forward ran over the ball, letting it run behind her for the onrushing Lina Magull to stroke home and give Germany the lead.
Subsequent chances would come at both ends. Guilia Gwinn hit the post for Germany within 15-seconds of the restart before it was Austriaâs turn to strike the woodwork through Barabra Dunst and Sarah Puntigam respectively.
Martina Voss-Tecklenburgâs team looked the more dangerous but their lead remained fragile.
Buhl couldâve changed that but was unable to put the game to bed on two occasions. The first was all her own making, a thunderous strike that hit the corner of the bar and post before, inexplicably, missing a wide empty net.
In the end, it would be Germanyâs high press that would pay dividends as Zinsberger is caught with the ball at her feet for too long. Popp closes her down and deflects that ball into the Austrian goal to progress her side to the semi-finals.
