European Giants Lock Horns Over Premier League Defensive Star
Bayern Munich have stepped up their pursuit of Marc Guehi the Crystal Palace & England centre back as sporting director Max Eberl confirmed that the German champions are actively exploring the market for defensive reinforcements.
According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Eberl met this week with Guehi’s representative Gordon Stipic to discuss the conditions of possible transfer , a move that signals Bayern’s growing intent to strengthen their back line amid uncertainty over the futures of Dayot Upamecano & Kim Min-jae.
Guehi 25 is entering the final 18 month of his current deal at Selhurst Park which runs until Jun 2026.
He has declined Palace’s latest renewal offer with several top European clubs including Liverpool, Man City, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Inter Milan closely monitoring his situation.
Eberl told DAZN before Bayern’s weekend fixture:
"It’s obvious that as Bayern Munich, we’re exploring the market. Our main goal remains to extend Upamecano’s contract. But if that doesn’t happen we must be ready. We’d be foolish not to be"
Reports in Sport Bild and BILD describe Guehi as the perfect successor to Kim Min-jae should the South Korean international be sold next summer. Bayern are also weighing long term depth options behind Jonathan Tah.
Liverpool came close to signing Guehi late in the summer window but failed to reach an agreement as Palace were reluctant to lose 2 key player in 1 window after selling Eberechi Eze to Arsenal.
However the Reds remain interested amid growing doubts over Ibrahima Konate’s contract situation & fitness.
Meanwhile Inter Milan are reportedly considering January swap proposal involving Yann Bisseck though both the Italian club and player turned down similar offer last summer.
Palace manager Oliver Glasner recently admitted that Guehi’s departure is inevitable:
"Marc has already told us he won’t sign a new contract, so he’ll leave next year. The club wanted him to stay but he wants new challenge and that’s part of football"
According to The i Paper, Palace may opt to cash in as early as the Jan window for reduced fee to fund their own transfer business.
