The European Golden Shoe is one of football’s great individual awards, presented each season to the leading scorer in the top division of a European league.
After an era in which Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo dominated the prize, there have been four different winners in the last five seasons.
Who will take home the coveted award in 2024/25? We’ve looked at the current leaders in the race for the European Golden Shoe.
Harry Kane won the European Golden Shoe last season after netting 36 league goals at Bayern Munich. He became just the second Englishman to claim the accolade, after Sunderland’s Kevin Phillips in 2000.
Kane is fifth in the current standings after scoring 15 goals so far this season. The joint-leading scorer in the Bundesliga alongside Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush, he’s ahead of the Egyptian in the Golden Shoe race due to fewer minutes played.
Viktor Gyokeres has outscored all other names on this list but ranks fourth due to the Primeira Liga’s lower co-efficient. Goals in Portugal’s top flight count for 1.5 points, as opposed to the two points handed to Europe’s top five leagues.
Gyokeres has now scored 75 goals in just 80 appearances across all competitions for Sporting. Having claimed the Bola de Prata as Portugal’s top scorer last season, he’s aiming to emulate Henrik Larsson. The ex-Celtic man is the only Swedish footballer to have won the European Golden Shoe.
Erling Haaland is one of three former winners in the current top five. After an explosive start to the season at Manchester City, Haaland has had – by his astonishing standards – a dip in performances and goals.
That said, his 16 goals are still enough to place him third in the Golden Shoe standings and second in the race for the Premier League’s Golden Boot. He could become just the third player to finish as the Premier League’s top scorer in three straight seasons, after Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry.
Robert Lewandowski is ageing like a fine wine with few signs of decline from the evergreen forward.
La Liga’s leading scorer this season, the 36-year-old has netted 16 goals in 18 games for Barcelona this season. After back-to-back Golden Shoe awards in 2020/21 and 2021/22, Lewandowski is targeting a third success this season.
Only Messi (6) and Ronaldo (4) have won the award on more occasions.
Mohamed Salah is the leader in the race for the European Golden Shoe. The Egyptian international has been in scintillating form for Liverpool this season, propelling the Reds to the top of the Premier League and Champions League standings.
He leads Europe’s top five leagues for both goals (18) and assists (13), performances which have placed him as a frontrunner for the 2025 Ballon d’Or.
No African player has ever won the European Golden Shoe.
