Joaquim Evangelista has welcomed UEFA’s punishment of Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni for homophobic insults to Vinicius Jr, calling it fair and an example to the game.

"Racism, homophobia, xenophobia, violence, harassment or doping deserve our total repudiation. Anyone who behaves like this must be punished," he said, speaking to Lusa. "A homophobic insult is as serious as a racist one."

Evangelista, president of the Portuguese players’ union, said the union backed the presumption of innocence and a swift fact-finding process from the outset, and he felt UEFA respected those principles. "It was important that the disciplinary process was quick and rigorous, and that happened."

He urged athletes to recognise their social impact amid a polarised climate, noting that football often becomes an outlet for wider frustrations. "It is important that sporting protagonists understand their role and how their behaviour impacts society."

Despite condemning the conduct, the union said it remains available to support Prestianni, working with FIFPRO and Argentine union bodies, including legal and psychological assistance.
