On the eve of the friendly against Zimbabwe in Jeddah, the Algerian national team exudes calm and confidence. It’s a healthy atmosphere, perfect for building momentum, and the newcomers are taking center stage. Among them, 18-year-old Borussia Dortmund defender Elias Benkara has made a lasting impression from his very first minutes in the mixed zone.

For his first call-up with the Fennecs, the young player did not hide his emotions.

"I've been following the Algerian national team since I was a kid, since the 2014 World Cup," he admitted, visibly moved.

"I'm very happy to be here. I have Algerian blood and I could die for Algeria. Even though I'm blond, first and foremost I'm Algerian."

His powerful words instantly won over the fans and revealed a deep connection to the national jersey.

Rapid integration and clear ambition

Benkara also made a point of thanking Mohssen Himour, a key figure in his selection, as well as his family. Warmly welcomed by the squad, he says he immediately felt accepted:

"The players welcomed me really well, the atmosphere is excellent. I'm here to help, especially in defense, where there are already some top players."

Standing 1.93 meters tall, the Frankfurt-born defender impresses with his maturity and a rare profile among young center-backs. Trained at Mainz and then joining Borussia Dortmund’s academy at just 14, he has risen through the ranks at lightning speed, establishing himself as a high-potential prospect.

"I hope we win these two friendlies to make our fans happy."

On the eve of AFCON 2025, Algeria may have found one of the most promising faces of its new generation.
