Everton handed Chelsea their first WSL defeat since May 2024 thanks to Honoka Hayashi's early goal.

The Japanese international latched on to the end of Toni Payne's cross from the right with Livia Peng unable to get in the way.

From that point on the game was all Chelsea as they looked to get back on level terms with the Toffees needing a superb performance from Courtney Brosnan and some luck to stay ahead.

On another day Alyssa Thompson would have bagged a few goals while Chelsea continued to have chances.

With time running out substitute Sam Kerr was denied from close range while Sandy Baltimore had an effort bounce back off the bar.

It was hard work but Everton eventually clung on to earn a famous victory and become the first team to defeat Sonia Bompastor's side in the league.

The result is particularly good news for Manchester City who are now six points clear at the top of the table while Chelsea remain second, one point ahead of Manchester United and two above Arsenal and Tottenham. Everton meanwhile move up to ninth with their second league win of the season.
