One of the reactions to yesterday’s staggering news about Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart was the reaction of the Everton fans to the same news. Ibrox Noise members noticed a very telling response to the news by his former fans at Hill Dickinson Stadium. The reaction was very much similar to what Rangers fans have expressed and one of the most telling comments, in fact two of the most telling comments, mocked the notion of his son and Chermiti.
One comment mocked the idea that he had hired his son only 20 days ago and was now fired having done that three weeks ago. The other comment thanked him personally for doing Everton a solid by refunding them for Youssef Chermiti. Rangers fans couldn’t help but roll their eyes over the whole notion.
The real question is, without ever accusing anyone of criminal activity. Just what in actual fact was going on behind the scenes to encourage Thelwell to sign Chermiti? It is the second most expensive signing in Rangers history. And without much of a shadow of a doubt the worst. A player that Everton could not get rid of and had wasted already around £12M on. Only for Thelwell, who took him there, to then bring him to Scotland for around the same price.
We know that sporting directors and agents get commission, it is part of the gig, there’s nothing illegal about that. But we do wonder just what lies beneath the surface on that particular deal. What encouraged Thelwell to sign this loser again. He knew fine well that Chermiti is an absolute dud and yet he still brought him to Ibrox with the 49ers money.
As we explained before £45M is a big reason as to why he was fired. Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart wasted their serious cash. However, we do wonder if Cavenagh and co will have a little look at Thelwell and see if there’s anything sordid behind the scenes on that particular deal and indeed on any others. The fact is that deal looks extremely crooked. Rangers fans question it regularly and we wonder what will appear on the day when that does actually get properly looked into.
