Benfica have blinked. The Portuguese giants wanted Enzo Boyomo, looked closely at the figures, and immediately walked away. CA Osasuna want €25m for their Cameroon international centre-back. For Benfica, that was a deal-breaker. For Everton, it is a flashing green light.

Everton handed a clear run at Osasuna defender Enzo Boyomo as Benfica baulk at the price

Africa Foot reports that the Merseysiders, alongside Fulham and newly promoted Ipswich Town, have been given a massive boost. Boyomo only moved to Pamplona from Real Valladolid in August 2024 for a modest €5m. 31 appearances later, his price has quadrupled. The 24-year-old wants the move, too. He has openly admitted he is ready for a crack at the Premier League. Ipswich previously made him a priority. Fulham are watching closely. But Everton need to tread very carefully here.

The financial reality of the Boyomo gamble

Boyomo’s raw numbers look decent on paper. He managed one goal and two assists alongside 122 vital clearances during 31 appearances in a gruelling 2025/26 La Liga campaign. He likes a scrap. He relishes aerial duels. But coughing up €25 million upfront is a massive punt for a club with virtually empty pockets.

David Moyes needs ready-made, immediate Premier League quality. Not unproven potential carrying a bloated premium. Osasuna finished a dismal 17th last term, shipping 50 goals along the way. That is hardly the sign of an elite, cohesive defensive unit.

Shedding that much transfer capital on a single foreign defender would completely cripple recruitment elsewhere. It makes zero tactical sense. Moyes should pivot. The domestic market offers far better value, or even the loan market, with smart options to buy.

The Toffees desperately need proven top-flight experience to steady the ship before the historic stadium move next year. Chasing a player who requires months of tactical adaptation risks wrecking a backline that already needs urgent surgery. You can get battle-hardened operators for a fraction of that cost.
