Everton head to Newcastle on Saturday looking to halt their slide and strengthen their push for a European place.
Everton have suffered back-to-back defeats, denting momentum just as David Moyes’ side were threatening to break into the top seven.
The Toffees now sit ninth, just one point above Newcastle in 11th. Both sides will be eager for three points, setting up what should be a fascinating tie.
Moyes will be encouraged by Everton’s away form.
Since his first away match back in charge in January last year, only one side has collected more Premier League points on the road than Everton.
The Toffees have also conceded fewer than a goal per away game in that period. That defensive resilience could prove decisive.
Everton will be determined to get revenge after losing the reverse 4-1. They won this exact fixture 1-0 last season.
Another disciplined display, a compact shape, and sharp transitions could expose a Newcastle side that has already conceded nine first-half goals in 2026.
Newcastle arrive buoyed by cup progress and four wins in their last five matches in all competitions. However, their league form tells a different story.
Eddie Howe’s side have lost four of their last five league games and are averaging just 1.33 points per match this season, their lowest return under the manager.
The Magpies have also dropped points in their last two home league fixtures. Avoiding a third straight defeat at St James’ Park will be a priority.
Newcastle are seeking to complete a league double over Everton for the sixth time, but Everton have the second-most away points in the Premier League since Moyes’ return.
The Magpies have lost four of their last five league matches, while Everton have not lost three consecutive Premier League games since January 2025.
Jack Grealish and Carlos Alcaraz remain sidelined, while Mark Travers is a doubt.
Moyes’ ‘hybrid’ centre-back Jake O’Brien returns from suspension and is expected to slot in at right-back, allowing James Garner, 24, to move into midfield.
Moyes may resist major changes despite recent defeats.
Jordan Pickford; Jake O’Brien, James Tarkowski, Michael Keane, Jarrad Branthwaite; James Garner, Idrissa Gueye; Harrison Armstrong, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Iliman Ndiaye; Thierno Barry.
