Everton Eyeing Ligue 1 Star as Midfield Revamp Accelerates

Everton are making moves in the summer transfer window, with reports from TeamTalk revealing that the Merseyside club have enquired about RC Lens midfielder Neil El Aynaoui. Despite Roma’s reported agreement with the player, Everton’s interest introduces fresh intrigue into the midfielder’s future.

El Aynaoui: A Talent in Demand

Neil El Aynaoui has emerged as one of Ligue 1’s standout midfielders, scoring eight goals in 24 appearances last season. While Roma seem to hold the advantage, having agreed terms with the 24-year-old until 2030, the door remains slightly ajar. Manager Pierre Sage added further weight to this stance, saying, “If he had been ready to leave, he wouldn’t even have played a minute of football today [against Standard Liege].”

David Moyes is looking to strengthen his midfield options. Idrissa Gana Gueye has signed a one-year extension but, at 35, his long-term contribution is uncertain. James Garner and Tim Iroegbunam bring energy, yet more creativity and drive are required if Everton are to push into the top half of the Premier League.

El Aynaoui’s profile fits perfectly. He is a dynamic box-to-box presence with an eye for goal, capable of complementing Everton’s current midfield setup. Additionally, as TeamTalk reports, the Toffees are also exploring a move for Douglas Luiz from Juventus, a former Aston Villa star with proven Premier League experience.

Interestingly, Everton and Roma share ownership under the Friedkin Group, but both clubs maintain independent recruitment strategies. This creates an unusual scenario: “Roma are yet to make a final decision on whether to sign El Aynaoui or Rios,” TeamTalk explains, leaving Everton with a potential opening.

If Roma decide to prioritise Palmeiras’ Richard Rios, Everton could emerge as frontrunners for El Aynaoui. Competition from Crystal Palace and other Premier League clubs, however, could drive up the price and complicate negotiations.

With several weeks left in the window, Everton fans can expect more movement. A new right-winger is reportedly on Moyes’ shopping list, but midfield remains the immediate focus. As an Everton supporter, this report is incredibly exciting. Seeing David Moyes target talents like Neil El Aynaoui shows that the club are not just thinking short-term but also building for the future. El Aynaoui’s numbers at Lens are impressive – eight goals from midfield is the sort of contribution we have been crying out for.

It is also reassuring to see Moyes looking to strengthen alongside Idrissa Gana Gueye, rather than relying on him. Gueye has been an unbelievable servant, but at 35, we all know he cannot carry the midfield every week. Bringing in El Aynaoui or Douglas Luiz would give us much-needed depth and inject some real competition.

I am particularly encouraged by the fact Everton are not backing down just because Roma are involved. Even though both clubs have the same owners, the recruitment teams are clearly working independently, and that shows ambition on our part. Imagine a midfield next season with Garner, El Aynaoui, and Luiz – that’s got balance, steel, and creativity.

We are used to nervy transfer windows as Everton fans, but this summer feels different. Moyes is making his mark, and if we can get one or two of these targets over the line, there is no reason we cannot push for a top-half finish or even challenge for Europe. Fingers crossed!
