Everton teenager Issy Hobson became the youngest goalscorer in Women’s Super League history after netting a stoppage-time equaliser against Arsenal on Sunday.
The Toffees all but ended Arsenal’s hopes of winning the title after holding the North Londoners to a 1-1 draw, with a record-breaking moment delighting a sold-out crowd.
Alessia Russo had fired Arsenal ahead on 80 minutes with her 10th goal of the campaign and one that looked likely to be the winner, until 16-year-old Hobson changed the narrative of the clash.
The teenager climbed brilliantly to nod in a half-cleared set-piece, with her 95th-minute header looping past Manuela Zinsberger to rescue a point for Everton.
The goal earned Everton a first point against Arsenal since 2012 and, at 16 years and 180 days old, made substitute Hobson the youngest scorer in WSL history.
“It’s something I’ve been dreaming of since I started playing football and for it to contribute to getting a draw against Arsenal is the best feeling ever,” Hobson said at full-time.
“I’ve been at Everton for my whole life so it’s even more special. I didn’t expect to come on and score and I am lost for words. I’m so excited to hopefully get more opportunities now after scoring. I’m so happy.”
