Everton are set to launch a complaint with the Premier League Game Match Officials (PGMOL) after being denied a penalty against West Ham United, The Athletic reports.
Tensions are rising after another refereeing decision left Everton feeling hard done by, and they’re not letting this one go.
David Moyes’ side suffered a 2-1 defeat at the home of his former employers. That loss has derailed their European ambitions, although they’re still in with a chance.
Despite sitting 11th in the Premier League table, Everton are just three points away from sixth-placed Brighton & Hove Albion, so Europa League qualification is still within reach.
However, they’ve decided to voice their anger over the penalty they didn’t get, which could have affected the outcome.
The incident occurred late in the game with Everton making a desperate push for a leveller.
A cross into the penalty area led to a coming together between Everton striker Thierno Barry and West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes.
Fernandes appeared to touch the ball while trying to stop Barry, but the referee waved play on despite protests from the Everton players.
The VAR didn’t make the situation any better as they stuck with the on-field referee’s decision.
According to the Premier League’s official match updates, the incident was judged to be accidental, with Fernandes’ arm movement considered part of a natural tussle rather than a deliberate action.
However, that explanation has done nothing to ease the frustration at Everton.
The Toffees are now preparing to raise their concerns as they seek clarity on the decision-making process and the VAR’s inconsistency.
“I think it would be (a penalty),” Moyes said. “It’s still pretty harsh on Fernandes, but he certainly punches the ball out, he puts his arms around (Barry).
“It’s not as if the ball comes onto his hand, his arm goes towards the ball.”
Everton have had several controversial calls go against them, but they still have plenty to play for in the remaining four fixtures.
