Everton Women sack head coach Brian Sorensen | OneFootball

Everton Women have parted ways with head coach Brian Sorensen after a poor campaign so far. The Blues are ninth, languishing near the bottom of the Women’s Super League table.

Their form at Goodison Park has been awful, with the club claiming their first home victory of the season on Sunday to move four points clear of relegation danger. However, it wasn’t enough to change the opinion on Sorensen, who has been with the club since 2022.

Assistant coaches Stephen Neligan and Ashley Tootle have also departed their roles with Everton Women.

“We would like to thank Brian, Stephen and Ashley for their hard work and efforts in their time at the club,” chief executive Angus Kinnear said in a statement.

“Sunday’s first win of the season at Goodison Park was important, but it has become evident that a change of direction is necessary to ensure the progression on the pitch we are all striving for.”

Sorensen will be replaced by Everton Under-18 coach Scott Phelan, who will take charge as the interim coach for the rest of the season. He will be assisted by Jennifer Foster and the goalkeeping coach Ian McCaldon.

Everton Women have picked up just three wins in 14 matches so far and have suffered nine losses. They suffered six straight home defeats this season following the historic move to Goodison Park this summer, prompting fans to boo at the end of the 1-0 loss to Brighton in January.

I've watched some of their televised games and I'd say they are similar to the men's team in lacking pace overall.

They seemed neat and tidy and quite well organised but easily put under pressure by quick and direct opponents.

It then comes down to who is responsible for the make-up of the squad. If that was Sorensen then he deserves to be the fall-guy.

Scott Phelan, Everton's U18s coach, has taken over as Everton Women's coach.

He has been a coach at Everton since 2012, 14 years... and that's the first time I've heard of him.

He was one of the endless Old Boys Club Kenwright coaching additions -- along with Jeffers, Dunc, Ebbrell etc. No idea if he's any good.

The Sorensen fellow was well supported financially but, aside from beating the RS, did nothing. So essentially Walter Smith 2.0.
