Sports players these days like to use their social media to send a message. Wesley Fofana has done that before, and did so again yesterday when he deleted all his Chelsea related content from his Instagram page.
Wesley Fofana’s Instagram page – without any Chelsea pictures.
It was a curious move – players tend to do that when they want to force a move. We’ve seen several players do that in this window alone: removing all reference to their current team to emphasise their desire to move on. It always comes off as a little petty and childish – it’s not really going to sway anything, and won’t have much effect beyond frustrating your current fans further (perhaps that’s the idea?).
But in Fofana’s case it’s particularly mysterious. Barring one brief return he’s been out injured for almost a full year now, and certainly isn’t pushing for a move away from Chelsea.
Enzo Maresca was asked in his press conference today about the defender’s decision to do that. The Chelsea manager confirmed that Fofana was very happy at the club, and with his current situation as he prepares for his latest injury return.
“Well, I speak with Wes every day,” Maresca said.
“He’s very, very happy. First of all, because he’s back from the injury, he’s joined all the sessions with us and he’s very happy. And as I said, after the Palace game, he was on the bench just to be with us. But from tomorrow, he’s with us and he can also get some minutes. So we are happy and he’s happy.”
“Then about Instagram, as you know, unfortunately, I don’t have an idea because I don’t use social networks.”
It’s since been briefed that it was just a “reorganisation”, but who’s believing that?
