Enzo Maresca knows the set up he is walking into as the manager of Manchester City. Maresca has previously spent time at the club as City’s EDS manager and as Pep Guardiola’s assistant during the 2022-23 season. Manchester City is a club that will give Maresca the time he needs to succeed as a manager and they will also provide him with the stability and ability to work as he sees fit, which gives him every ingredient required to be a successful Manchester City manager.
Speaking during his first press conference as Manchester City manager, Enzo Maresca revealed that he feels like he is back home. Also, Maresca said that he believes that the patience and time that the City hierarchy typically provides is the ideal setting for him. The Italian manager explained: “I feel like I’m back home. I feel very good. The feeling, since day one, has been brilliant. I’m so happy. It is a privilege that the club decided to go for me. I have said many times, I consider Pep the best coach in the world in the last 20 to 25 years. It is a challenge.”
“Also, in the history of managers with many years at the same club, [their replacements] struggle a bit. Sir Alex, Arsene… but it is also a challenge to do the right things.”
“The organisation is the main thing. This club has had three managers in 17 years. That is not normal and has not happened often.”
“I am confident that we can continue to do a great job and continue to do the job that has been done in the last 13 years, since Roberto Mancini was here.”
Enzo Maresca is stepping into what could be the ideal environment to succeed as Manchester City manager. He will be afforded time, as the City hierarchy has displayed previously. Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini were given time to establish their styles and both won the Premier League and a domestic trophy. Pep Guardiola spent a decade as City manager and the City hierarchy allowed him the space he needed to successfully implement his philosophy and standards. Pep Guardiola guided Manchester City to 20 trophies in a decade. Guardiola also often praised the board at City for allowing him the time and space to thrive as a manager.
This is the environment that Enzo Maresca will work in at Manchester City. He will be given the time, and patience, he needs to firmly establish himself as City’s manager. Knowing what lies in wait at Manchester City is a major part of the reason as to why Maresca left his post as Chelsea manager last season. The two clubs are polar opposites in how they go about their business. Chelsea are erratic operators in the transfer market and have gone through a staggering amount of managers in recent years. City are the opposite. They prefer stability and back their manager at all times. Given the stark differences between the two clubs it is no wonder why Maresca was so eager to come back to City as their manager.
Enzo Maresca knew once Manchester City came calling for him to replace Pep Guardiola, he knew where he wanted to be. Maresca will give everything he needs to succeed and it will be on him to thrive in the environment that Manchester City have created.
